Triathlon at the Paris 2024 Olympics

Cycling at the olympics comes in many forms as you may have read from our other blogosts and guides to cycling at Paris 2024 Olympic Games, but triathlon events are a test of even more endurance, speed and grit in a multi-sport race that takes to the water as well as the land. The first triathlon was introduced to the Olympics in Sydney 2000.

What are the Triathlon Olympic events at Paris 2024?

There are 3 triathlon events at the Paris Olympics 2024, the men's race, the women's race and the mixed short relay.

The triathletes will be racing in the heart of Paris, beginning with the swim in the River Seine by the Pont Alexandre lll (bridge) and taking in landmark sites including the Champs Elysee when they take to a city route for cycle and run legs of the triathlon.

What is an Olympic triathlon?

Both mens and womens Olympic triathlon races include swimming, cycling and running in that order and the times are taken continuously with the best time taking the gold medal. The swim distance is 1500m, followed by a 40km cycle and finishing with a 10km run. Each rider has change over stations where they can swap out gear ready for each part. There are rules around the changeover too with penalties given if the athletes break them. A helmet must be worn before mounting and cant be removed until the rider has dismounted for example. There are also markings on the crossover to indicate when the rider can mount the bicycle.

What is a mixed relay triathlon?

The third triathlon event in the Paris 2024 Olympics is the mixed relay. This consists of 2  men and 2 women per team who have to race in the order of man-woman-man-woman. It's a shorter triathlon course with distances of 300m swim, 5.8km cycle and 1.8km run with each athlete tapping the hand of their teammate as they complete a full course as per a regular relay.

History of the Triathlon

Early Beginnings

The sport of triathlon has a relatively recent origin compared to other athletic events. It began in the 1970s in Southern California, emerging from the San Diego Track Club as an alternative workout to the rigours of track training. The first known triathlon was held in 1974, and featured a 460-metre swim, 8 km bike ride, and 9.6 km run.

The Ironman Phenomenon

The triathlon gained significant attention with the introduction of the Ironman event in Hawaii in 1978. This combined three existing long-distance races: the Waikiki Roughwater Swim (2.4 miles), the Around-Oahu Bike Race (112 miles), and the Honolulu Marathon (26.2 miles). The challenge was simple yet daunting: complete the entire course without a break. This event captured the imagination of endurance athletes worldwide and laid the foundation for triathlon's global popularity.

Blend of sea and land

The blend of sea and land in racing terms is a test of endurance and speed - triathlon pulls together sports that test the body to the limits. But outside of racing, the joys of cycling and being on the water celebrate the pure joy of movement and feeling of freedom through diverse environments. They offer physical exhilaration and soulful tranquillity. That’s why coastal cycling is often coupled with watersports. Cycling and surfing each provide unique and thrilling ways to connect to nature. Deep appreciation and connection to nature whilst allowing you to enjoy the simple pleasure of movement in the wild.
